The Hatchery

The Friends of the Berkshire National Fish Hatchery is the authorized Friends Group for the US Fish & Wildlife Service’s Berkshire National Fish Hatchery

We  help sustain the Hatchery and ensure it thrives. We encourage public appreciation for and support of the Hatchery, freshwater ecosystems, and recreational fishing in the Berkshires.

And the hatchery  raises thousands of native brook trout for stocking in local waterways to support recreational fishing, public youth fishing events, and educational programs.

This special place in the woods of Marlborough and Monterey Massachusetts, is home to many species of wildlife. It is also the source of a pristine aquifer that supplies 200 gallons per minute of high quality water to the Hatchery. With over a century of public operation, tens of thousands of fish have been cultured in this water source, which flows by gravity through beautiful, natural pools.

At the hatchery, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains lake trout broodstock for restoration efforts in the Lower Great Lakes.

Learning to fish at a Hatchery Pond derby is a summertime favorite.
